Menté Brain Fitness Exercises

Brain Fitness is a state of mind. It is the health and well-being that makes you “fit” for life or the daily demands of work. The most important thing you should remember is brain fitness is not about your intelligence quotient (IQ). Instead it is the brain’s ability to effectively, efficiently and thoroughly do its job, consistently. Brain Fitness includes:

Attention/Concentration

Attention is the ability to direct one’s attention in accordance with one’s will. It is the ability to tune in some things and tune out others, despite distractions, boredom or fatigue. Many memory complaints have nothing to do with the ability to remember names, faces, or phone numbers, usually it is the failure to focus (concentrate) on the task at hand.

Perception

Perception is the ability to capture and process the information that our senses receive. Types of perception are: visual, hearing, touch, smell or olfactory, taste, visual-spatial.

Processing Speed

Processing speed is the time it takes a person to do a mental task. It is related to the speed in which a person can understand and respond to the information they receive, whether it be visual (letters and numbers), auditory (language), or movement.

Executive Function

Executive function is like the CEO of the brain. It includes: working memory, perception, processing, reasoning, planning, logic and problem solving. When you have issues with executive functioning, any task that requires planning, organization, memory, time management and flexible thinking becomes a challenge.

Memory

Memory can be defined as the brain’s ability to retain information and voluntarily recover it when needed. Types of memory are: sensory -visual (vision), auditory (sound), olfactory memory (smell), gustatory (taste), and haptic (touch). Memory skill is commonly affected by aging.

Language/Verbal

Language skills allow us to translate sounds into words and generate verbal output. Language isn’t only important for communicating with others, but also for structuring our thoughts and ideas.

Numerical

Numerical skills refer to the way a person perceive, processes and calculates numbers and numerical symbols.
